Disconnecting and Reconnecting the Battery

If you plan on storing your City-El, or working on the electrical system, it is essential to disconnect the batteries. It's best to isolate the series connection of the batteries at the negative pole of the right battery as seen in driving direction. The battery charger must be unplugged before disconnecting the batteries!

When working with wrenches in the " motor compartment " great caution is required ! Risk of short circuit!

With a short-circuit across the battery set, currents of 1000 ampere and more can occur. Tools, battery posts, and cables can evaporate into a drizzle of liquid metal. Metallic watch bands and watches can also lead to short-circuits.

When reconnecting the batteries, one must first discharge the capacitors of the motor control and on-board electronics, otherwise there is an excessive current draw when connecting. For example, hold the line voltage plug of the battery charger between the battery pole and the last clamp which to be attached, the resistance of the transformer will discharge the capacitors. One should wait a few seconds for the capacitors to discharge. Even after discharge, one should avoid it both poles of the plug to touch. The voltage el with 36 V is not lethal, but with damp hands it can be quite unpleasant. For connecting, other resistances are suitable e.g. soldering irons or the like. 12 V lamps are not suitable; they can burn out quickly since the created voltage is briefly the driving voltage. After connection, the capacity meter will show no points. Attach the battery charger, and if the batteries are already fully charged, the meter will quickly register 10 dots.

NEVER OPERATE THE BATTERY CHARGER WITHOUT BATTERIES ATTACHED!
